5 tips Billy wish he had known to prevent diabetes.

1. Lose weight- Research has shown that 80% of people, with diabetes, are overweight. Every pound you lose lowers your risk of diabetes and can improve your health. Stay away from fad diets, just eat healthier. Use variety and portion control as part of an over-all healthy eating plan.

2. Get more physical activity- Exercise can help you lose weight, lower your blood sugar, and raise your body’s sensitivity level to insulin. Insulin helps your body keep your blood sugar within a normal range. Any physical activity is better than none. Start out walking and then increase your activity as you can. Try different things so you can find an activity that you enjoy. This will make it easier to stick with. 1

3. Eat foods that are high in nutrients and low in calories- You don’t have to stop eating good food to eat foods that are high in nutrients. Replace fatty fried foods with baked, broiled, or grilled fish, chicken, and lean meats. Add in some fresh vegetables and non-fat yogurt or ice-cream and you have a complete, healthy meal. Sometimes all it takes to make healthy food taste good is a little seasoning. 1

4. Get regular checkups- There is no substitute for a good doctor. Be sure to keep your appointments with your doctor and follow his advice to lower your risk for diabetes. 2

 5. Lower your stress level – Stress releases hormones that effect how your body handles sugar. It increases your blood pressure, which raises your risk for diabetes. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and lose weight at the same time! Social interaction can also lower your stress level. Relaxing activities, such as reading, meditating, or listening to music are also really good stress relievers.
